June 02, 2010

For the first time, the International Students of FEU – EAC had a cultural exposure tour in Angono, Rizal, the country’s art capital on April 18, 2010.

Headed by the Student Activities and Development Unit and in cooperation with the Registrar’s Office, this program aims to expose the International Students to the culture and tradition of the Philippines.

1st Destination: Angono Petroglyphs
The Angono Petroglyphs is the oldest known work of art in the Philippines. There are 127 human and animal figures engraved on the rockwall dating back to 3000 BC. It sits along the boundaries of Angono, Binangonan and Antipolo –
provinces of Rizal – and the group had to pass through a man-made cave going to the site.

2nd Destination: Blanco Tree
This tree has a special place in the heart of well-known artist Jose "Pitok" Blanco. As stated on the landmark plaque on site, this tree has played a very important role to fishermen on the lake where it was used as a navigational guide. View from the tree is spectacular. One can see the Laguna de Bay and as far as Metro Manila Skyline.

3rd Destination: Blanco Family Museum
The famous Blanco Family of painters has its own museum along a simple unassuming road in Angono belying the amazing collection of paintings Jose "Pitok" V. Blanco, his wife and seven children have produced through the years.

4th Destination: Botong Francisco Residence
Doña Aurora Street in Barangay Poblacion Itaas is famous for home and studio of the late Carlos “Botong” Francisco and the concrete murals on the walls that lined the street. The group visited the home of Botong Francisco which also served as his studio. Today, the grandson of the late National Artist, Carlos “Totong” Francisco II, occupies the gallery and named it The Second Gallery.

5th Destination: Nemiranda Art House
Nemi built a home-studio called the Nemiranda ArtHouse that in itself captures the images of the town. Reminders of the local culture can be seen on walls from mythical creatures like the sirena to characters from Filipino myths.

6th Destination: Balaw-Balaw Restaurant
Balaw-Balaw Restaurant is one of Angono’s famous pit stops because of its unusual array of exotic dishes like uok, itik, and palaka. It also has an art gallery with the works of local artists on display.

Even if the foreign students came from different countries with various culture and traditions, the cultural exposure program helps the foreign students appreciate the Philippine culture and realize that it is indeed embedded not only in everyday life of the people but it was rooted on arts that show how relevant the Filipino tradition is.
