Aiming to address the College’s need to sustain a level of instruction that is industry-relevant, FEU-EAC sent Ms. Ma. Ruth S. Que, full-time faculty of the Humanities, Social Studies, and Communications Department and Adviser of the English Guild, to IBM Daksh on May 10 to June 4, 2010 as part of the Faculty Immersion Program of the College.

On her first week, Ms. Que had a taste of being part of the recruitment team when she was tasked to pre-assess applicants during IBM Daksh’s Job Fair held at Trinoma. She also joined the team on their field work at Libis and Ortigas to meet with candidates provided by their business partners. According to Ms. Que, one of the most exciting assignments given to her was attending a one-week communication skills training of the company’s new hires at PBCom Bldg office in Makati.

Ms. Que experienced to sit down with one agent during his call and observed that one should be patient and have a good problem solving skill. The agent shared with her that his task is really challenging because of the skills one has to apply while dealing with customers. It is like a combination of EQ and IQ applied in the workplace. “Aside from good communication skills, confidence in facing challenges and determination to achieve one’s goals are qualities that any candidate/applicant or graduate should possess”, said Ms. Que.

Ms. Que who was the first faculty member of the College to be certified by IBM as an AdEPT (Advanced English Proficiency Training) instructor and responsible for implementing the AdEPT program in the College’s English curriculum, was the eighth faculty member who was sent to industry partner for immersion.

“My immersion at IBM Daksh is a truly enriching experience”, Ms. Que added. Her month-long experience with the company’s recruitment team gave her a better view of the real demands of the industry. “I can now explain and share better to FEU-EAC students the importance of good English communication skills”, she ended.

FEU-EAC sees itself as having a pool of academicians with relevant industry experience who can effectively teach its industry-driven curricula. It likewise aspires to inject a corporate culture in an academic setting so as to afford its students the best simulation of what can expect when they step in the industry.
