SCC President Bags Jose Rizal Award

January 06, 2011

Dan Lester S. Mendoza, a graduating BS Industrial Engineering student and the Student Coordinating Council (SCC) president, was hailed one of the ten Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines (JRMSP) at the Knights of Rizal International Headquarters, Port Area, Manila on December 30, 2010.

Seventeen finalists, all of whom are college students – four from Metro Manila, six from Luzon, four from the Visayas and three from Mindanao – vied for the prestigious award. These students were evaluated on the following criteria: 35% for academic excellence, 15% for student leadership in local school and community activities, and 20% for student leadership in regional, national and international arena. The final interview on December 29 was held to determine the top ten awardees, as this account for 30% of their rating. On December 30, in time for the commemoration of the 114th death anniversary of the Philippine national hero, the outstanding JRMSP were named and awarded by the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Supreme Commander of the Knights of Rizal Hilario G. Davide Jr. Each of the ten awardees was given Php5,000.00 cash, a medal and a trophy.

The Order of the Knights of Rizal is a non-political, non-sectarian organization created by the 1951 law to propagate Rizalian ideals and teachings throughout the country.

“The search which was initiated in 1988 has honored the best of the Filipino youth every year thereafter who best epitomize the Rizalian qualities of academic excellence and leadership in campus and community activities and the Rizalian virtues of love of country and people, thereby serving as living models to the youth of the land,” the Knights of Rizal press release states.
