January 04, 2011

Aiming to continue develop the leadership skills of its student leaders, FEU - East Asia College recently participated in the two national conferences both held in Baguio City.

Philippine Association of Administrators of Student Affairs (PAASA) 3rd National Interactive Youth Forum

On November 11-13, 2010, five presidents from the different Recognized Student Organizations, together with SACSO Director Renelyn B. Salcedo and SADU Coordinator Marlon O. Maglipas, attended the PAASA 3rd National Interactive Youth Forum with the theme “Student Governance: Transparency and Accountability” at the Venus Park View Hotel, Baguio City.

The convention focused on how student leaders could be more transparent in their school or community as well as help them understand their accountabilities as leaders. Student representatives from different schools in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and National Capital Region were able to share their views and opinions which made the session more interactive and the delegates more participative. PAASA believes that supporting the youth leaders in their ethical governance and leadership is really a worthwhile endeavor.

Also, the convention was graced by former Representative Riza Hontiveros who shared her experiences as a student leader and as a lawmaker. According to her, the role of student council officers is very vital since it is the foundation of learning of a leader. She also added that the youth in general must be transparent and responsible in order to bring positive changes in their school and community.

Philippine Association of Campus Student Advisers (PACSA) Annual Convention

The entire Student Coordinating Council (SCC) officers, together with their adviser, Mary Grace A. Untal; Ma. Ruth S. Que, adviser of the English Guild; Marlon O. Maglipas and Renelyn B. Salcedo from SACSO, and two international students attended the annual convention of PACSA with the theme “Excellence in Campus Advising and Student Leadership” on November 26-29, 2010 at the Teachers Camp, Baguio City.

Dr. Clarence Batan, an invited speaker from the University of Santo Tomas, shared a topic on social responsibility in campus advising and student leadership. He said that Filipinos give so much importance on their social status where he presented actual experiences being a student leader during his college years. He also quoted from the TIME Magazine’s Person of the Millennium, Albert Einstein, which states, “It is high time that we change the ideal success to the ideal of service”. This kind of service will be initiated by the youth and the youth should always remember the social values towards nation building.

On the other hand, a talk focusing on the challenges, issues and concerns in campus advising was conducted by Dr. Felizardo Y. Francisco of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

PACSA also had the NCR and National Election of officers in which SCC CE Representative, Mark Damar Calagui, was elected Auditor of PACS-NCR.

The Cultural Night, which focused on culture and excellence and which was the most awaited event among the delegates, was held on the last day of the convention. The activity showcased the extraordinary talents of the participants from different colleges and universities all over the regions. The event also recognized some of the advisers and students who significantly contributed to the 31 years of PACSA and 15 years of PACS.
