With its vision of providing the FEU – East Asia College community with pertinent information and acting as an agent of change within the community, the official student publication of FEU – East Asia College, The Cursor, represented by Evan Louie Mercado and Ma. Rodelyn Bataclan together with their adviser Ms. Loida Soreta and SADU Coordinator Mr. Marlon Maglipas, joined the 7th National Spectrum Fellowship held from February 3 to 5, 2011 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

This annual fellowship was organized by the University of St. La Salle’s official student publication, The Spectrum. Ten schools from all over the country participated in this three-day campus journalism conference. Among the speakers who shared their wealth of knowledge and experience were famous columnists Isagani Cruz, Joaquin “Quinito” Henson and the Kabataan Partylist Representative Raymond Palatino. These talks provided the young writers with up-to-date, relevant techniques and ideas in writing.

Aside from the encouraging and informative talks, the conference also held its first Spectrum Awards for Journalism. Rodrick Malthus Durano won the title for Best Sports Story for his entry entitled “NBA Update: Changes Around the League,” while Ma. Rodelyn Bataclan grabbed the Best Human Feature Interest for her entry “Efren Peñaflorida: The Promising Face of Change.”

As the voice of FEU – East Asia College students, The Cursor did not only succeed in providing relevant information to the College but, more importantly, it succeeded in expressing the youths’ views and conceptions of their environment.
