2011 Research Conference for Faculty and Students

May 14, 2011

As FEU East Asia continues in “Building a Culture of Research”, the Academic Affairs Office, together with the Computer Engineering Department, organized the Research Conference for faculty and students for this year.

For the 8th Faculty Research Conference on March 23, 2011, the roster of presenters included Engr. Jaime Adrian Jamasali (CpE), Ms. Adela C. Cabantan (HSC) and Ms. Marilou Syjueco (HSC).

Seeing the advantage of robots in the industry, Engr. Jamasali, in his ongoing research, introduced a new way of controlling a 4-axis robotic arm with gripper claw. He presented a system that will control a robotic arm in three-dimensional space and in real time. Ms. Cabantan, on the other hand, explored the effects of teachers’ written comments in improving the students’ rewrites, and tried to confirm or negate previous researches on the effects of teachers’ written comments through her research entitled “The Effects of Teacher Written Comments on Students’ Written Speech”. Lastly, a study aimed to determine the communication apprehension of Engineering and IT students was Ms. Syjueco’s research topic.

A week after the faculty’s showcase of works, the students demonstrated their aptitude in research as five student-groups presented their researches at the Audio Visual Room for the 7th Student Research Conference on March 30, 2011.

Featured in the conference were: Armageddon, a mobile game that applies the concept of Artificial Intelligence; JobFinder System, a web-based system that provides user with functions related to job hunting online; Design of Zigbee Wireless Fishpond Monitoring System, a monitoring system that allows pond personnel to observe fish parameters; Development and Implementation of a Radio-Controlled Flammable Gas Detector Robot for Industrial Gas Manufacturing, a mobile robot capable of sensing flammable gas that will help solve the problem on leaks explosion; and Microcontroller-Based Automated Marker Ink Refilling Machine, a system that detects the right combination of color of ink to be used in refilling the marker.

As FEU East Asia continues to be a venue for research, the students and the faculty also continue to explore innovative ways that will benefit the society.
