FEU-EAC Captures the Hearts of Street Kids and Urban Poor Youth

May 27, 2011

Addressing every Filipino’s right to education, FEU – East Asia College, through the Community Extension Service Unit (CESU) in cooperation with the Information Technology Education (ITE) Department, conducted a Basic Computer Literacy Program from April 27-29, 201. A total of twenty-two participants were able to complete the three-day training held in one of the Computer Laboratories at the Technology Building.

The participants consisted of street children and urban poor youth who came from the areas of Pasay, Luneta, Morayta, Monumento, Ermita, and Sta. Ana under the management of CESU’s non-government organization (NGO) partners, Childhope Asia Philippines and Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation, Inc. To ensure effectivity of the training, the trainers used strategies such as the use of Filipino as the mode of instruction for the participants to better understand the lectures, energizers to make the lectures more entertaining, roving training facilitators to assist the participants and the rewards system to further encourage them.

The Basic Computer Literacy training was a success as can be seen in the impact it brought on the participants. John Dave Francisco, a representative from Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation Inc., spoke for the group, “Marami kaming natutunan dahil bumaba kayo (trainers and assistants) sa level namin.”

The time, expertise, experience and passion shared by the trainers from the College enabled the participants to learn even outside of formal instruction. Literacy programs such as this are one way of FEU – East Asia College to provide education to disadvantaged Filipino youths.
