December 16, 2011

In support to the initiatives of the government on disaster response management, FEU – East Asia College, through SACSO-CESU, conducted the iTamKaalaman: Anatomy of a Disaster – Preparing for the Big One” on November 23, 2011.

The activity was a symposium that aimed to raise awareness on earthquakes and their effects. Ret. Brig. Gen. Juanito Dalmas, NSTP Special Assistant from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), discussed the safety measures, including proper behavior and presence of mind, to be observed during earthquakes. He also shared the different government agencies that can help the people after the calamities and the importance of NSTP graduates as reserved volunteers. Research Specialist Charmaine Villamil from PHIVOLCS DOST, on the other hand, talked about the Anatomy of an Earthquake which includes the types of earthquakes, difference between magnitude and intensity, occurrences in the country, faults and movements, and the effects and damages of the different earthquake magnitudes.

Over 120 participants, including NGO partners from Childhope Asia Philippines and Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation Inc., as well as the associates and students of the College, benefited from the activity.

It is crucial for every Filipino to be equipped with the right knowledge and training in case a disaster or calamity strikes as the Philippines has been identified as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Activities such as the iTamKaalaman are FEU-EAC’s ways in helping the government raise public awareness on current trends and issues.
